Support for Fixed Term Researchers

Bringing together 15 departments and over 1,000 researchers, the Oxford Social Sciences Division represents one of the world’s largest hubs for social sciences. Our research addresses critical global challenges, including climate change, migration, law, governance, and education.

We deeply value our researchers on fixed term contracts, and particularly those who might be early in their academic career, providing a supportive environment designed to nurture talent and provide the guidance, resources, and opportunities needed to succeed.

The Research, Impact and Engagement (RIE) Team sits within the Social Sciences Division, supporting divisional research strategy and research policy and practice in departments, facilitating research, impact and engagement activities, and providing professional administrative and management advice in support of divisional priorities.

We offer a wide range of resources, skills training and development opportunities for fixed term researchers and research staff, all designed to complement and supplement discipline-specific training within departments.

How can the RIE Team help you?

We help researchers develop competitive, interdisciplinary and multi-partner funding applications, offering insights into the research funding landscape; we can also provide detailed feedback on draft proposals, and work closely with early career researchers to prepare applications that consistently secure prestigious awards, such as the British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowships, the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship and the Future Leader Fellowships.

Our term card of research, impact and engagement training is available on the RIE Team Sharepoint site, which requires SSO to access. You can take a look at the current term card below, but to find out more information about each session and to book your place please visit our Training and Resources SharePoint page (SSO required).

We run a specific termly briefing session to help researchers address aspects of funding applications that are focused on issues related to research culture, including (but not limited to) questions about the research environment, professional development, leadership, Responsible Research & Innovation, and EDI. See the term card (SSO required) for more information on when these sessions take place.

You can subscribe to our monthly Funding and Opportunities Digest, which delivers curated research funding, impact and engagement-related opportunities and events for social sciences researchers direct to your inbox.

The Impact and Engagement Toolkit is designed to help Social Sciences researchers plan, deliver and evidence research impact with confidence. Whether you are developing a proposal, designing engagement activity, or preparing to demonstrate impact, the toolkit provides practical guidance at every stage.

It covers the fundamentals of research impact — key definitions, funder expectations, and the basics of impact evidence — before moving onto hands-on planning tools. The Impact and Engagement Toolkit is available on our Sharepoint site (SSO required).
